nbc 10 starts now. today patco riders may be slowed by some changes. we'll tell you how a construction project is affecting the commute. and taneyç little league world series run is now over. we'll y this is nbc 10 news today. i'm chris cato. definitely give yourself extra time to get to work this morning. rain is coming down pretty hard in some areas. this video is from montgomery county along route 309 in montgomeryville.

let's get to meteorologist brittney shipp. >> the rain is widespread but the heaviest amounts of rainfall are starting to push offshore, so are most of the th depends when you're going to leave for work as to what you'll find when you head out the door. this is a shot from the aramk d parts of philadelphia along the i-95 rridor,ushing into south jersey and sussex county. if i show you where some of the heaviest rainfall is, it's over parts of philadelphia, claymont, just to the east of pitts grove and mystic island. that's where we're find something of the heaviest pockets of rainfall. as we head into the rest of today, we'll see cloudy conditions and showers continuing. our temperatures will be cooler than what we saw yesterday, ranging between 78 and 81 degrees. i'll break it down hour by hour and let you know what to expect on this friday. for now we check in with katy

with a look at traffic. >> that rain you talked about coupled with overnight construction could account for some issues for drivers at this early morning hour. this is a live look at 59 near the airport at route 291. there's an overnight construction zone set up. 95 north you're taking out two left-hand lanes here. drivers going near the international airport 95 north, just be aware of that. there are two accidents in montgomery county to tell you about, upper moreland east county line red at centennial road an accident there. it might slow things up a bit. this accident cleared in the last few minutes but it was accounting for some delays at dekalb pike. just to give you an idea of the rain on the roadways, this is maple shade, route 73 at fox meadow drive. you can see from the intersection, traffic is getting by just fine but you may want to slow up a bit because it is wet out there. chris?

patco riders will see changes starting this morning, thanks to a new construction schedule. it's part of a two-year, $103 million plan to replace the tracks over the ben franklin bridge. here's a live look at that bridge now. patco is closing the tracks on the north side of the bridge starting today to replace the tracks, ties, signals and other equipment. patco says there will be fewer gaps in service and shorter wait times than during the previous work stage. the new train schedules run through october 21st. new from overnight, a man shot and killed in the frankford section of philadelphia. and shooter waited on police. it happened in the 2100 block of torresdale avenue. the 56-year-old shooter turned himself in and is talking to investigators. police aren't yet saying why he shot the other man. >> playable, right field. pierce jones.ç game over. >> and with that, taney's

magical ride at williamsport came to an end last night. the ftd team lophiladelphia tea one run. they are the tieing run at third base with two outs and the final at-bat. they could not come up with a hit as you saw there. now the dragons are headed back to philadelphia but they should do so with their heads held high. they gave us so much to cheer about over the last couple weeks. that team made a lot of people proud, matt delucia. >> reporter: the fans are proud and this team should be proud of themselves right about now for coming this far. they know they likely won't play together on this kind of stage again. so for now, they are soaking in the moment. we'll take a look at some more of that game video here. the dragons, they did get out to the early lead in the top of the first inning but then chicago took over. despite a great effort by taney to close in on that lead, they did come up one run shy.

mo'ne davis, the star pitcher was not eligible to start last night because she played on wednesday. we did speak with mo'ne after the game. here's what she says was going through her mind after that last out. >> to not cry or not be mad because we made it this far, so there's no reason to cry or anything. >> reporter: and right there on the scoreboard is the final score of that game, 6-5. we will hear a lot more from mo'ne throughout the morning. also coming up, putting together reaction from parents and fans who were out here last night. for now we are live in williamsport, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. what a ride for the dragons and mo'ne davis. she's now a national celebritying becoming the youngest athlete ever to be on the cover of "sports illustrated." baseball isn't even mo'ne's best sport. she wants to go to uconn and play college basketll and then

turn pro. we talked to her coach in philadelphia about that. >> for mo'ne the sky's the limit. she's a superior athlete all the way around. she's worked so hard an been so dedicated. >> we haven't heard the last from her. she became the first female pitcher to record a win at the little league world series. this is video from a watch party last night by the way. she was the sixth female to get a hit in the tournament and the forth to get an rbi. delaware state police are investigating the shooting of a liquor store clerk during a robbery in wilmington. the clerk was shot and was taken to christiana hospital. a person who was outside the store was also beaten up by the robber and taken to a different hospital. we still don't know either victim's condition. right now there are no arrests in that case. happening today, the son of convicted aborgs doctor kermit gosnell is scheduled to appear

in court. he's accused of breaking into a home in southwest philadelphia in june. he was shot and seriously wounded during that attempted robbery. it is move-in day at some colleges in this area today. in radner, the philly fanatic will greet students. first year students will arrive atç arcadia in glenn side. chestnut hill university and school of the sciences are getting ready for students today. and a collection of school supplies collection, is also going on today. nbc 10 was at camden high school last night where the

district has installed a new alarm system and cameras. some of the school entrances will now be closed off. others will require staffers to use swipe cards to get in. and similar changes have been made at woodrow wilson high school. >> this high-tech security pilot program will help us to take dramatic steps to improve the safety of our students and staff. >> the camden school system is working with the county police department and the mayor's office on those initiatives. hundreds of volunteers got the dunbar academy to get ready for the first day of classes. they painted, planted and replaced a roof on the school. happening today, two nasa engineers will share their experiences as part of a preview to the lehigh valley air show. they both work on that agency's new rocket that is capable of deep space exploration. the air show runs tomorrow and sunday at the lehigh valley international airport.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. we're tracking rain moving through our area. allow a little extra time as you're heading to work. friday showers for us, a cool weekend on tap, temperatures staying in the 70s. and then we'll see a warming trend that will send us back to the high 80s closer to average or even above average. here's a live look at boat house row where rain is coming down and a closer look at our community temperatures. philadelphia 70 degrees right now, mostly cloudy skies at the airport. humidity is at 87%. wind speeds out of the east at 7 miles per hour. as we head into the rest of this morning, expect a mild start to your friday, 67 degrees here in trenton. 61 in mt. pocono, 67 in allentown, 68 in atlantic city. 71 in dover. here's a closer look at the rainfall. you can see some of the heaviest thunderstorms have already pushed offshore but we're still dealing with a good amount of rain coming down in philadelphia right over center city and right along this i-95 corridor.

so if you're just to the south of village greene, you're seeing some of the heavier pockets of rainfall. this is coming down at a good intensity. when you're out there on the roads, leave early for work. be careful, allow extra time for you. we're also dealing with another batch of rain moving through parts of south jersey right now, moving through tuckerton. also just to the north of galloway. our next 24-hour show that we are going to continue with a chance of showers on and off throughout today as we head into the late morning hours even as we push into the afternoon and early evening. so keep your umbrella handy with you. you'll need it throughout today. we're not expecting incredibly heavy downpours. we could see a few pockets of heavy downpours. a cloudy start to your saturday but we plan to dry out as we head into the rest of saturday which will set us up for a very nice weekend. temperatures at 77ç degrees. if you take a lack at sunday, 7

and nice. our average for this time of year is in the mid-80s. this is beautiful weather for us on tap. as we head into next week, if you take a look, we see a warming trend. we'll head back to the high 80s by next thursday. keeping it dry for the weekend. we appreciate that. the roads are not dry this morning. let's get a check with katy zachry to see if the rain is causing problems out there. katy? >> basically right now the rain is not causing major problems, mass transit is good, on schedule but as we go later into this morning, with the rain, that could change. delaware majors are clear. so are the majors in new jersey. i am following an accident in montgomery county that we'll get to in just a minute. we talked about the rain is issue an this morning. this is a live look at 76 at spring garden where you can see the slick roadways in both directions. it's not causing problems on 76. the accident in montgomery county in upper moreland, east county line road at centennial road may be slowing things up for you coupled with the slick roadways. be aware of that. this is 95 at cottman avenue

where we know there's long-term construction right in the southbound lane over here. be aware of that. chris? the search is on for a man who police say is preying on certain customers after they leave the bank. he's accused of robbing nearly a dozen senior citizens. we'll show you how philadelphia police say he stakes out his victims. plus, a restaurant explosion caught on camera. police want your help in identifying this man.

breaking news to tell you about. one person has been hurt in a two-alarm fire in camden. it's happening on the 900 block of south 4th street. two homes are on fire right now. the person who was injured is being treated for breathing in

smoke. we have a crew on the way to the scene there. we'll bring you new information as soon as we get it in along with video of that fire. in other news, texas governor rick perry is scheduled to be arraigned on felony charges including abuse of power and coercion of a public servant. these allegations stem from his veto of funds for a district attorney's office after she was charged with dwi. perry calls the charges a farce and says they are politically motivated. perry is not required to appear at today's arraignment. now to the situation in ferguson, missouri. it was another quiet night actually as protesters hit the streets again without violence. this was the scene just a short time ago as demonstrators marched through ferguson peacefully. police say seven people were arrested for minor offenses. this was the 12th night since unarmed teenager michael brown was shot and killed by a police officer. meantime, the governor of missouri called back the national guard from ferguson. troops had been there since monday protecting the police command center. they'll start leaving today.

he made that call after the protester flare-ups have calmed down in recent days. >> we have a number of actions that will happen over the next few days that could respark. these are challenging times. i will work to continue as long as necessary. >> and protesters have presented a petition with 70,000 signatures pushing for st. louis prosecutor robert macculloch to step down. it's claimed he's biased because several of his relatives work for the police including his father who was killed in the line of duty. also right now, a federal civil rights investigation is under way in ferguson. in atlantic city, police officers are now wearing body cameras. those cameras similar to the ones seen here can record video and audio but only after an officer switches them on. 20 cameras will be split among officers on three shifts. they cost about $300 each and were paid for through a community development block grant. philadelphia police are looking for this man who set off an explosive in a restaurant here.

he put a device in the wall and then you'll see soon after there was an explosion. thankfully no one was hurt. police have not said why that restaurant was targeted. the trial of the woman charged with abducting a 5-year-old girl from her philadelphia elementary school and sexually assaulting her has been postponed to next week. 21-year-old christina regusters faces kidnapping and deviate sexual intercourse charges. police say in january 2013 regusters dressed in muslim attire to take the girl from an elementary school. also, regusters spent a lot of time watching animated child pornography butç they are not

able to present that evidence. they want to catch a man who's been robbing elderly people. the man has carried out 11 crimes between june 12 and august 13th. he waits at banks, watching for elderly people to withdraw money and then follows them home and robs them. one victim was 96 years old. a friend of the boston marathon suspects admitted in court that he removed a backpack from dzhokhar tsarnaev's dorm room. >> responsibility that the people here in boston and around the world will eventually understand that he did not do so out of malice. >> the young man's attorney there. sentencing for him is set for november. authorities in mexico say it

could take months to clean up an oil spill in a river there. a pipeline ruptured when thieves tried to tap into it. the gasoline spilled into the san juan river. while it has been contained by floating barriers there, the head of the mexican water commission says it will take two to three months to clean up. now your first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> we're tracking showers and rainfall this morning as we head into the rest of your friday. cool weekend for us, temperatures drop down to the 70s and then a warming trend. so our cooler temperatures will be short lived. by next week we'll be back into the mid-to-high 80s. for philadelphia, 07 degrees, humidity at 87%, wind speeds out of the east at 7 miles per hour. winds gusting up to 18 miles per hour. 67 in allentown, 67 in pottstown, mid-60s in

westchester, low 70, 72 in wilmington, 71 in stone harbor and 68 degrees at the atlantic city airport. when you head out the door you're going to notice a good amount of rainfall. wet roads expected for us this morning. we continue with the on and off showers. most of rain is clearing out of the suburbs and the poconos. most of the rain is situated in parts of south jersey and along the shore. for philadelphia, we're dealing with moderate rainfall, right over 676 and then also just to the south of paulsboro. if we take a closer look at our other areas dealing with moderate rainfall, just to the north, galloway. all of the rainfall is tracking to the southeast. we also want to tell you about a flood advisory that will stay in effect until 5:45. just be careful. we've seen a good amount of rainfall falling in the southern parts of burlington county. take it easy, especially if you find flooded roadways. our next 24-hour futurecast shows on and off showers

east, you can see the wet roadways, though we're not dealing with issues from the rain at this time. that could change as we go on through the morning. in montgomery county, there was an accident i was telling you about in upper moreland, east county line road at centennial road. that has cleared in the last few minutes. that's great for drivers in that area who are up at this early hour. for drivers in new jersey in the belmar area, i-295 and i-76, the westbound hov lane, if you're headed to the exit of 26, that ramp is closed for repair work. chris? an ice bucket challenge goes horribly wrong. we'll show you how two firefighters became seriously injured while participating in that trendy fund-raising campaign. plus, how 17,000 drivers in new jersey who ran red lights just got very lucky.

two firefighters were injured in kentucky while doing that ice bucket challenge that's so popular online. the firemen were spraying cold water over the tiger's marching band for the als ice bucket challenge but they moved their aerial ladder too close to nearby power lines. >> electric energy surrounds these high-powered wires and an arc occurred, striking the two occupants who were in the bucket. >> these firemen are recovering were their conditions said to be improving. the als association released a statement saying our hearts go out to the injured firefighters an their families. 17,000 drivers in new jersey who ran red lights will not get a ticket thanks to a glitch in the computer system. 17 towns that contract with the company that runs those cameras, the company had a glitch that

impacts five local towns including lawrence township, gloucester township, deptford, glassboro and monroe township. the new jersey court sent those towns this letter letting them know they can't issue those red light tickets. it's against court rules to send a ticket 90 days after a violation but apparently the company that runs the red light system exceeded that time frame. happening this weekend, live butterflies. you can see them in all stages of their life cycle at tyler h arboretum. you can also watch monarch tagging demonstrations. the event is free. nbc 10 is a partner with that arboretum. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> and showers are moving through our area. see the wet roads there at our live picture of cape may as we

nbc 10 breaking news. we are arriving on the scene of that breaking news. nbc 10's jesse gary standing by in camden where someone has been injured in a house fire. jesse, what's going on? >> reporter: that's right. the two buildings are on fire here in camden, chris, are on south 4th at spruce. one person suffered smoke inhalation. you can see the flames on the roof of the second building which is on the left.

they've jumped to the other building on the right. fire crews are dousing this with water, both from the ground and from the air, trying to put it out. but the fire is on the inside. when we first got here it was on the first floor moving up to the second floor and now it is just on the top floor but it's in the roof, well into the roof. there's an aerial ladder on the left-hand side of your screen and they are spraying water down into the building. and on to the roof. there's a lot of smoke in this area. the wind has changed a little bit, so the smoke is blowing towards our camera position. there's heavy smoke in this area. there's a charter school across the street over on spruce. but doesn't seem to be affected. firefighters are trying to contain it just to these two buildings. they're making sure it doesn't jump to the row
